KTH, Tsinghua Launch C-Campus Virtual Learning Collaboration

3D Modelling: Artificial Intelligence Meets Consumer Electronics
Published Sep 06, 2012A KTH robotics research group has opened a website that lets users create their own 3D models using the Kinect motion-sensing camera, an inexpensive computer gaming input device that’s won over tens of millions of users since its launch less than two years ago. The camera makes data capture simple for anyone with an Internet connection, while the real work takes place in advanced artificial intelligence software on a server in the group’s lab at the School of Computer Science.

Published Aug 20, 2012KTH’s iMobilityLab is tracking GPS signals from hundreds of taxis on the streets of Stockholm, building advanced computer algorithms that can look for patterns in the data to create forecasts based on weather, time of day, construction delays and more. The researchers say their model could be used in smartphone apps and urban traffic planning anywhere.

Warm Welcome for Arriving Exchange Students

Grant Will Speed Production of Gas Sensor “Noses”
Published Aug 02, 2012KTH and a group of industrial partners have been granted $1.5 million for large-scale development of new sustainable production systems for gas sensors. Current and future applications include wearable monitors for asthma patients, breath alcohol lock-out devices for cars, carbon dioxide monitoring for climate control systems and oxygen monitoring for hospital intensive-care units.

Exchange Student’s Atmospheric Experiment Set for Flight
Published Jul 30, 2012“The experience of a lifetime” says Will Reid of the time he spent managing a rocket-based atmospheric study at KTH. A student at Australia’s Melbourne School of Engineering who recently returned home after 18 months as an exchange student in Sweden, Reid will see his team’s handiwork launched 85 kilometres into the Earth’s atmosphere later this year.

KTH Physicists Cheer Higgs Discovery
Published Jul 04, 2012Particle physicists at KTH were jubilant following Wednesday’s announcement that the international research team working with the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland had discovered nearly indisputable evidence of the existence of the elusive Higgs boson. First described theoretically in 1964, the Higgs is seen as the last major piece of the physics puzzle known as the Standard Model. “Everyone in our group is incredibly excited that our work has contributed to this historic discovery,” says researcher Bengt Lund-Jensen.

Published Jun 25, 2012A drawing programme and a 3D printer: before long, that could be all it will take to produce the micro- and nanostructures required for the millions of devices and sensors of the future. With a new manufacturing technology, researchers at KTH Microsystem Technology hope to bring mass innovation capabilities to smaller companies and markets — just as affordable computers have dramatically increased innovation in information technology.
