Insurance
Social insurance aims to provide financial security at every stage of life. It therefore mainly provides support to those who are ill, disabled, parents and pensioners. To be eligible for a social insurance benefit, you must, as a rule, either formally reside in Sweden or be employed and work here. Examples of residence-based benefits are child allowance (barnbidrag) and housing allowance (bostadsbidrag). If you work in Sweden, you are covered by employment-based benefits, which include sickness benefit (sjukpenning) and rehabilitation allowance (rehabiliteringsersättning). Social insurance is financed by Swedish income taxes.
Our recommendation for our employees, no matter how long you plan to stay in Sweden, is that you make sure that you have the insurance of your choice before coming to Sweden.
Some of our employees that plan to stay in Sweden shorter than a year are only partly covered- or sometimes not covered at all- by insurance from their homeland. For some of the situations that might occur, KTH has an insurance called Swedish State Group Insurance and Personal Insurance (Grupp- och individförsäkring, GIF) through Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet). This insurance is primarily for invited foreign persons visiting KTH and can sometimes be applicable for employees. Please read more and find out details at

We also recommend employees to make sure that you have the insurance of your choice when it comes to a householder´s comprehensive insurance (hemförsäkring). You sign this through an insurance company of your choice.
There are a lot of different Swedish insurance companies that can offer you insurances. In addition to our social insurance system you may want a private life insurance. KTH has an agreement with one company for a life insurance, Skandia, an insurance called Group insurance. This includes life assurance, disability insurance, lump-sum disability benefit, accident insurance, child insurance and group private health care insurance. In order to be covered by an insurance as this one, you have to make an agreement with the specific insurance company. For further information on this insurance contact Skandia at telephone +46-20-555500 or visit the link below.
It may be wise to check with different insurance companies to get the best offer according to your needs. You might get a better price if you gather all your insurances in one company.
