Third-cycle qualifications

Doctorates

A doctorate is received after completed studies in one of KTH’s third-cycle subjects corresponding to 240 credits.

Besides a scientific thesis (doctoral dissertation) corresponding to a minimum of 120 credits, the doctorate includes courses corresponding to a minimum of 60 credits. The study plan for the subject may establish higher requirements for the course component. At least 60 per cent of the total course component must be at third-cycle level.

First-cycle courses in technology may not be credited towards the qualification. An exemption from this requirement may be granted to students with eligible studies other than technology. Students with such studies may, to some extent, make use of courses outside technology to replace compulsory courses in the study plan for a subject. This must be documented in the individual study plan.

Further objectives within the framework of the Higher Education Ordinance system of qualifications (appendix 2 of the Ordinance) and the objectives set out in this local system of qualifications are established by the Faculty Council in study plans for third-cycle subjects. For detailed information, see the respective study plan.

The qualification is named “Teknologie doktorsexamen” (Doctor of Philosophy). In certain individual cases, a first element other than “Teknologie” may be used, as decided by the Director of Doctoral studies.

Besides a scientific paper corresponding to a minimum of 60 credits, a licentiate degree includes courses corresponding to a minimum of 30 credits. The study plan for the subject may establish higher requirements for the course component. At least half of the total course component must be at third-cycle level.
