Background
Matters concerning approved leave from studies and extension of periods of study should be assessed on the same basis throughout KTH.
It must possible for students to obtain approved leave from studies and extension of periods of study. Nevertheless, the Higher Education Ordinance contains no general rules on approved leave from studies or extension of periods of study. It should be possible to apply the same principles to holders of doctoral studentships as to students who do not hold such studentships. A rule which entitles a student to an extension of the period of study when supervision cannot be provided to a normal extent has been introduced under
Supervisors and supervision of doctoral students
The President has resolved that
the following guidelines on approved leave from studies and relinquishment of a third-cycle study programmes should apply at KTH.
Approved leave from studies
Approved leave from studies means planned absence which is notified in advance.
Medium-term visits at foreign higher education institutions will be included in the ordinary third-cycle study period and are therefore not counted as approved leave from studies.
When the question of approved leave from studies arises for doctoral students with doctoral studentships or doctoral grants, the rules contained in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100) and in Ordinance 1995:938 on study subsidies for doctoral students and the internal regulations applying to the matter must be taken into consideration.
Doctoral students who have been granted approved leave from studies are entitled to resume their studies after the end of that period.
Notice of approved leave from studies must be given in writing. Decisions on approved leave from studies are made by the director of doctoral students. Doctoral students who interrupt their studies without giving notice of approved leave from studies may only resume their studies provided that resources and places are available.
Relinquishment of a third-cycle study place
A third-cycle study programme must be relinquished in writing. When a third cycle study programme is relinquished, it should be possible to "transfer" any activities carried out, if there are enough of them, to independent courses.
Form:
Permanent interruption (Anmälan - definitivt avbrott)
Registration in LADOK (the National Student Records Database)
Details of approved leave from studies and relinquishment of places must be registered in LADOK. Approved leave from studies is entered in LADOK as 0% activity. In addition, details of the approved leave from studies, the period and the registration number of the decision must be entered in the individual study plan.
