This 50% seminar presents progress on optimization and risk management for future local electricity markets with high distributed energy resource penetration. Since local electricity markets are operated over inherently unbalanced three-phase distribution networks, phase imbalance is explicitly represented throughout the investigations. The seminar is structured around four connected themes: operation, contract design, planning, and probabilistic estimation. The first part addresses AC optimal power flow in unbalanced distribution networks using tractable relaxation and feasible-solution recovery approaches. The second part develops cash-settled contracts for hedging temporal, spatial, and phase-dependent price risks while preserving revenue adequacy. The third part considers the co-optimization of network reinforcement and phase-aware flexibility procurement in unbalanced distribution networks. The final part develops efficient probabilistic estimation methods for network variables and distribution locational marginal prices under uncertain operating conditions using cumulant propagation and saddlepoint approximation.
