Materials constitute the fundamental building blocks for our advanced society. Centuries of successful development in materials research have allowed development of complex and high-performing products, constructions, and technologies within healthcare, ICT, infrastructure, farming, etc.

However, the facilitating components, built up from advanced materials, require energy and resources largely derived from non-recyclable/sustainable sources. The associated pollution and over-consumption of natural and mined resources has driven our society into a state of imbalance versus nature.

New, fundamental knowledge within materials science is essential to derive novel materials that can place civilization onto a pathway towards a sustainable society.

Sustainable materials research is a field is of particular strength at KTH, with several groups and constellations working actively towards the understanding, creation, and control of complex materials with a precision down to the single atom level. Novel materials, processes, and devices will be critical for realizing a sustainable society.

Current status of the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE) will be presented.
