Abstract
Metals and alloys are fundamental to our modern society, featuring in both advanced and everyday applications. Consequently, both intentional and unintentional human and environmental exposures occur, inevitably leading to oxidation (corrosion) and changes in surface characteristics over time. These processes are highly dependent on the material and surface properties as well as the prevailing chemical conditions. An improved mechanistic understanding of how material, surface, and corrosion properties, along with transformation/dissolution properties, evolve over time under various conditions relevant to human and environmental exposure is essential to ensure the safe use of metals.
Examples of ongoing interdisciplinary studies aiming to unravel mechanistic relationships between the material and surface properties of metallic surfaces and their (eco)toxic potency upon contact with humans and the environment due to natural, societal, and/or occupational exposure will be presented.
