Pandemic outbreaks can come in several waves. Researchers from KTH, among others, are now investigating the development of Covid-19 using wastewater sampling from sewage treatment plants in Stockholm.
The sample is concentrated for RNA-based approach and the RNA o the virus is quantified. Thereafter, an analysis is made of the content showing the occurrence of viruses and to what extent. Until now, traces of the virus has been measured in each of the eight random samples of wastewater collected before and after treatment from three Stockholm water treatment plants during April 2020. Zeynep Cetecioglu Gurol, associate professor at KTH explains why wastewater is such great a source of information to provide quick oriantation about the situation and how the pandemic is developing.
