Regarding the unrest in Hong Kong

Published Nov 14, 2019

Here is information about the measures KTH has taken with regard to the 22 KTH students currently enrolled in programmes in Hong Kong. As the unrest has escalated and Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sharpened its recommendation, students are urged to return to Sweden.

Since the summer, KTH has closely followed the events in Hong Kong. The campus areas have not previously been affected and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not advised against travel to Hong Kong. For these reasons KTH has not taken special measures until now. The university has maintained contact with the students on site throughout the period of unrest.

Three factors contribute to KTH now urging its students to go home:

  1. Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sharpened its recommendation following the unrest of recent days in the campus areas of Hong Kong.
  2. KTH has since Tuesday received emails from students who stated that they feel worried. Some have also been invited by their partner university to leave campus.
  3. Our university partners have emailed and confirmed that the campus environment is no longer perceived as safe, and that students can complete their studies from home.

These three factors caused KTH yesterday (Wednesday) morning to strongly urge its students to return to KTH. KTH subsequently contacted all concerned. The cost of returning home is covered by the university’s insurance, provided that the trip is booked through Falck Global Assistance.

KTH will continue to monitor developments in the coming days, and also follow up on how each student is doing.
