Election of members of the University Board appointed by the teaching staff

A new University Board shall be appointed for the period 1 May 2020 - 30 April 2023. The University Board includes three members who represent the teaching staff. These shall be appointed by election by KTH’s eligible teaching staff.
The election will be performed electronically during the period 2-8 March 2020. Information about the voting procedure will be sent to those who are entitled to vote on 21 February 2020.

The nominating committee proposes the following persons as members of the University Board to represent the teaching staff:

  • Hjalmar Brismar, professor, Department of Applied Physics/Biophysics and SciLife Lab (SCI) (has sat on the University Board for a period)
  • Ulrica Edlund, professor, Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology/polymer technology (CBH)
  • Nicole Kringos, professor, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering/structural engineering and bridges (ABE)

I have been a teacher member of KTH’s board since 2017 and would like to continue for another mandate period.

As members of the KTH board, the three teacher members have important tasks. We contribute insight and knowledge from our activities as teachers and researchers and we must uphold the faculty’s interests in various issues.

What I see as the most important contribution we teacher members have made over the last three years is that we have balanced the discussions of the board. KTH is not a normal government authority; there are special circumstances and conditions that govern the activities of researchers and teachers which we have been able to highlight and explain to the rest of the board.

Teacher members also have the opportunity to bring forward various issues for discussion by the board and with the president. One issue that causes lively discussion, and not just at KTH, and which is not yet fully resolved is that of the conditions of employment for the senior faculty. That is something that I intend to continue to drive forward.

Ulrica Edlund

Quality, collaboration and sustainability are issues that I am very committed to and in which I believe that KTH can further hone its activities. Given its breadth and competence, KTH has the capacity to be a strong driving force in the conversion to a sustainable society, in both teaching and research. Many years of experience as a researcher and teacher at KTH and deputy director of one of KTH’s research platforms have given me perspectives on the organisation that I hope to be able to contribute as a teacher representative on the University Board. I wish to focus on the faculty’s key role and conditions in the constant process of developing and strengthening KTH.

Nicole Kringos

Mere application of current systems to the new sustainability requirements are not always effective, and more intrinsic systemic changes are needed to achieve our common goals. A redefinition of (education-, research- and their handling) structures; integration with industry; and KTH’s role are hereby important.

Application of life-long learning as a principle should include intrinsic coupling of education levels. A sharing of resources between stakeholders may provide long-term benefits, as it supports early stage integration of visions, nurturing and engagement of talent and cross-disciplinary knowledge creation.

KTH’s ability to drive a long-term vision makes us an important leader in this change process. The advent of digitization serves as an enabler for change, as smart solutions require new partnerships as well as new structures. Digitization, however, also means an increase in data dependency and the responsibilities to avoid data bias, such as the gender data gap, should systemically be addressed.

The world is changing rapidly and KTH must do the same. At present it is still moving too slowly.

My vision for the KTH of the future is a leading technical university which goes forth into the breach not just in research but also pedagogics and learning, which fosters engineers with high scientific, technical and humanistic competence and whose gaze is directed not just at technology and technical systems but also at the paradoxes of human life and our ever more complex society. A university that practices what it preaches in sustainability, equality and collaboration, where the administration is easy, transparent and effective, where the technical equipment works and the students study not just for exams but for life.

In the work of driving KTH in this direction I will draw on my interdisciplinary background and many years of experience of KTH both as a student (master of science in engineering physics in 1998) and as a researcher and teacher (since 2004, now professor).

Joakim Jaldén

I wish to contribute to commitment and quality in education by giving researching teachers at KTH better opportunities and encouragement to be able to value the education. I fully understand the difficulty of combining excellent teaching with excellent research, but can see the importance of outstanding researchers being part of driving our pedagogical activities.

In the role of professor at KTH, in addition to my pedagogical commitment as teacher and programme director I also have a considerable research practice ranging from basic research with funding from the Swedish Research Council to industry-related research with direct funding from industry.

With one foot in education an a committed presence in classrooms, PA network and in SoTL; with one foot in research and 5 doctoral students to work with; and with a burning will to influence and improve, I ask for the confidence of KTH’s teachers to represent them all on the University Board.

Gunnar Malm

My vision is that KTH shall be a leading university with great self-confidence. Researchers and teachers shall dare to take up a position and make a difference in society, in both the short and the long term. KTH shall be an organisation in balance, in which research, teaching and support for activities complement each other.

In concrete terms, I will work to strengthen the internal and external profiles of all five KTH campuses. In both teaching and research, I will work for greater movement and exchange between KTH and the society around it. A modern and relevant KTH shall be ready to interact with people of all ages and life situations in a competent way.

I believe that I have the right personality to work on strategic and complex issues. I have built up my network at KTH through many important assignments in the environment and sustainability. I believe in clear communication, practical and flexible solutions and a common responsibility for developing KTH.

Johan Silfwerbrand

KTH has three tasks: teaching, research and collaboration. We need to place more importance on teaching, especially in recruitment and promotion. Swedish taxpayers are behind most of our funding, so it is reasonable for us to intensify our collaboration with the community. In our endeavours to bring in skillful students, teachers and researchers from abroad, we should promote our country’s and our city’s natural and cultural values. The administration must be streamlined so that the overheads that weigh us down in the line can be reduced.

One of those who nominated me wrote: “I think that you are a good candidate for the board because you express a well-balanced view of most things, are experienced at KTH and brave enough to stand up for what you believe in.” These are big words, which I promise to try to live up to if I am elected.

I am currently head of department and responsible for impact at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment. Have previously been PA for the former V-programme and head of a research institute. Perhaps you have read some of my debate articles.

The nominating committee’s proposal

The nominating committee for the election of members of the University Board to represent the teaching staff during the mandate period 1 May 2020 to 30 April 2023 consisted of professor Per Berglund, chair, professor Anders Forsgren, dean and professor Anna-Karin Tornberg, member of the University Board for two mandate periods.

The nominating committee describes its work like this: Our work started at the end of October and we have had five meetings. Great interest led to 64 nominated candidates for the whole of KTH at the end of the nomination period on 1 December. We then had very rewarding interviews with 17 selected candidates over four days at the beginning of January.

8 women and 9 men were interviewed. The final proposal, with which we are very satisfied, provides a good spread of KTH’s activities and breadth as well as good continuity. The nominating committee’s proposed board members well fulfil the criteria that we have established and worked from:

  • integrity,
  • the ability to take responsibility for KTH as a whole,
  • together reflect the breadth of KTH’s activities.
