Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström writes about the new KTH FOOD center which will tackle various societal challenges related to food and food production.

This week I have been at a steering group meeting for the new center "KTH FOOD", which is a so-called multidisciplinary initiative led by the CBH School and involving several of KTH's schools. The aim of KTH FOOD is to gather the expertise and research that exists within the food sector to create good conditions for further developing this area at KTH. The goals within KTH FOOD are to address various societal challenges related to food, such as sustainable food production, recycling of residual products, development of functional foods, and studies of food's effects on health and well-being.

Since food and food production has a very large climate impact and the sector makes up a large part of Swedish industry, it is an important area for future research. In addition to research, courses will also be developed, both at master and postgraduate level. KTH FOOD is currently a KTH venture, but there are plans to use the venture to seek external research funds and involve external parties, for example various companies in the food sector. It will be interesting to follow the development of KTH FOOD over the next few years!
