Amelie about faculty recruitment needs

Published Mar 25, 2026

Head of School Amelie Eriksson Karlström writes about recruitment needs and the staffing levels of the faculty.

Last week, the CBH School’s management team and faculty board attended a joint conference, which was both interesting and enjoyable. We had very fruitful discussions on important but difficult topics, such as how we view recruitment needs and the size of the faculty. The school’s faculty has grown slightly in size since the CBH School was established, and in order to be able to strengthen core funding, the size would need to be reduced. At the same time, we need to be able to recruit new staff in areas where there are significant teaching needs or where initiatives are being undertaken in strategic research areas relevant to the CBH School.

However, as we have several expected retirements over the next 10 years, and some faculty members are leaving for other reasons, we believe it is possible to strike a balance where we strengthen the faculty through new recruitment whilst the total volume decreases over time.

Other important issues we discussed at the conference included how to manage financial deficits at various levels within the school, what we can do to enhance the quality of research, how doctoral education can best be organised going forward, and what is required to create a better working environment at the school. I think many of us went home feeling re-energised after good discussions and spending time with lovely colleagues!
