In my 80% seminar, I will summarise the last 4 years of PhD work and
talk about current and future plans for my final PhD year. I have been
interested in how humans use available channels of communication to
establish, maintain and repair mutual understanding. Standing on
shoulders of early psycholinguistic literature (Grice, Goffman, Clark
and others), I have conducted studies with humans evaluating grounding
behaviours with statistical and machine learning models. Additionally,
through a series of studies in human-machine dialogue, I have revisited
fundamental HCI questions involving embodiment and interactional
failures. I have empirically evaluated grounding behaviours in
interactions with humans, by exploring how machine behaviour shapes
human behaviour, and how human behaviour further develops machine
behaviour. The approach I have been adopting so far is to take
incremental steps on the behavioural analysis of human conversation, and
using frameworks for multisensory input, I have used low-level
behavioural signals to extract high-level features that represent the
humans’ states of uncertainty, and representations of mutual
understanding. All studies have been possible through collaborative work
with friends and colleagues from KTH and abroad.
