Seminar description

Automated driving will reduce road fatalities by 95 per cent, eradicate traffic jams, turn parking spaces into parks, make air cleaner, and free up our time used for commuting. Most of the experiments in current automotive research feature one, maybe two, human participants. But, think about driving around your town. Traffic situations are very complicated. And being able to perform experiments with multiple participants is essential for understanding the mechanics of communication of situation awareness and collaborative decision-making in both modern and future traffic.

During the talk, I will present the open-source coupled simulator, which allows to conduct experiments with a virtually unlimited number of human (and automated) agents. To demonstrate the capabilities of the tool, I will introduce two experiments performed with the simulator: (1) where eye contact between a driver of an automated car and a pedestrian was visualised to decide the yielding behaviour of the vehicle; (2) where the effectiveness of an external Human-Machine Interfaces was tested during a critical evasive manoeuvre.

Pavlo Bazilinskyy is an assistant professor at TU Eindhoven, focusing on AI-driven interaction between automated vehicles and other road users. He finished his PhD at TU Delft in auditory feedback for automated driving as a Marie Curie Fellow, where he also worked as a postdoc. He was the head of data research at SD-Insights. Pavlo is a treasurer of the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA) and was a director of the Research and Innovation unit of the Erasmus Mundus Association (EMA).
