Societal Transformations for Climate Action

CALL

Published Sep 04, 2020

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research (Mistra) invites research groups, jointly with civil society organizations, the public sector and other stakeholders, to submit proposals for a new research programme. The purpose of the call is to facilitate societal transformation for climate action through research and innovation. In line with Mistra’s statutes, the research programme shall be of strategic environmental importance. In this call, we specifically emphasise the role of civil society in a broader sense.

The background to the call is the escalating climate change and the need for comprehensive and far-reaching adaptation measures that at the same time promote a more equal society. In line with Mistra's statutes, the new research program will address environmental strategic issues and have a systems perspective. The call emphasizes in particular the role of civil society.

According to the UN, 2020 should be the starting point for a decade of increased levels of ambition and more measures to achieve the goals agreed upon by the countries of the world in the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030, a so-called ‘Decade of Action’. Within the EU, both Parliament and the Commission have raised their ambitions in the climate field and decided that the transition to a fossil-free Europe will be a central part of the green issue launched in 2019.

The current call focuses on three parts of climate change, which are described in more detail in the background report. First, the role of civil society in achieving the global sustainability goals must be examined and collaborations between the research community and civil society organizations explored. The second part is about a fair transition, where the perspectives of vulnerable regions, groups and individuals become the starting point for the transition. Finally, the call focuses on critically examining the role of digitalisation as an enabler, or a risk factor, for climate change. The program should include interactions and conflicts between different environmental and social goals.

Applications are sent to Mistra no later than: Friday 22 January 2021 at 16.00.
