Interview with Ricardo Vinuesa, new Vice Director of the KTH Digitalization Platform

Ricardo Vinuesa is the new Vice Director of the KTH Digitalization Platform. We have interviewed Ricardo about how he will take on the role as Vice Director.

In addition to his role as Vice Director of the Digitalization Platform, Ricardo Vinuesa  is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Mechanics at the School of Engineering Sciences. His research interests include fluid mechanics, high-performance computing, as well as machine-learning methods to study complex engineering problems and develop sustainable technical solutions. Before arriving to KTH in 2014 as a Postdoctoral Researcher, he conducted his doctoral studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (USA), and he worked in industry for 1 year. He is also affiliated with the AI Sustainability Center in Stockholm.

- I believe that multidisciplinary research will become progressively more relevant, so as to achieve truly innovative and impactful solutions to the current challenges in our society, says Ricardo.

Ricardo recently led a broad multidisciplinary effort aimed at assessing the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). This study, published in Nature Communications, has received extensive attention, and highlights the relevance of digitalization in everyone’s lives.

- I would like to continue establishing bridges across disciplines, and enable international collaborations through the Digitalization Platform to realize the vision of the many researchers from KTH interested in pursuing novel approaches to their fields.

Outside academia, Ricardo enjoys spending time in the nature with his wife and daughter, and he loves practicing football and swimming. We look forward to following Ricardo Vinuesa on his journey and warmly welcome him to the role of Vice Director of the Digitalization platform.
