Webinar: COVID-19 Crisis Impact on Global Energy Use

It is impossible to know what the future holds, but at the same time essential that we prepare for and shape what comes next. Even though the current pandemic is above all a global health crisis, it has major implications for global economies and energy use. How can we emerge from the COVID-19 shock as a more resilient society and continue to accelerate a successful global energy transition? The World Energy Council is exploring the ‘new normal’ to navigate the global energy transition post-COVID-19.

2020 was meant to be an outstanding year for renewables. So far renewables have been the only source with a growth in demand, whereas coal and oil demand have been hit hard, gas to some extent and electricity demand significantly reduced. But the crisis has triggered a ‘perfect storm’ of conditions favourable to bankruptcy across the energy sector, uncertainty over future electricity demand being one of the them. The pandemic could derail the energy transition as well as the renewable energy’s progress.

The World Energy Council actively contributes the insights needed by energy leaders to make effective strategic, policy and business decisions about the energy transition. Through ongoing surveys of the World Energy Council community, the Council has started to explore what a ‘new normal’ may look like. The information at hand needs to be used to prepare for the post-COVID-19-crisis future by using alternative scenarios when moving forward, preparing the energy community for a new and different context to explore and navigate the future global energy transition.
