Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees

The Joint Master Degree action (EMJMD) is an opportunity for KTH to seek funding for joint Master's programmes leading to a joint or double degree. EMJMD is one of the actions within the EU programme Erasmus+ and seeks to support the delivery of joint Master's programmes by offering scholarships to students worldwide for their participation in these programmes.

Summary of action

The Erasmus+ EMJMD action will be funding a number of joint Master's degree programmes, including management and student scholarships. The programmes applying for the action must be fully developed at the time of the application including a draft Consortium Agreement. The JMD programmes must consist of;

  • 60, 90 or 120 ECTS.
  • a consortium of institutions from at least 3 programme countries, with studies and degree awarded from at least 2 programme countries.
  • result in a joint or double degree with a joint diploma supplement.
  • 4 consecutive student intakes.

The programme offers 13-20 student scholarships and at least 4 scholars/guest lecturers per intake. The initial funding period is 4 to 5 years covering four consecutive student intakes.

Application and deadline

The application deadline for 2020 was 13 February at 17.00 CET. Estimated time to prepare, complete and gain internal approval for a project proposal is nine months.

Process for preparation of project proposal

  1. Contact your School/Department Management and Administration in order to ensure internal support to the initiative. N.B. New initiatives shall be presented by the School to KTH Management for approval before proposal submission. 
  2. Discuss with potential partners and stakeholders.
  3. Contact the GVS-BUS group for an overview of the process for new programmes at KTH gvs-bus@kth.se .
  4. Contact IRO for useful information and generic texts. 
  5. Prepare your proposal in line with the programme guide documents above.
  6. Prepare the draft Consortium Agreement, the Student Agreement and the Joint Diploma Supplement
  7. Contact the IRO for finalisation, proof reading.
  8. Provide documents for signatures: manadate (KTH as partner) or Declaration of honour (KTH as coordinator) togehter with signed School approval Form to IRO, for signatures from KTH Legal Representative 10 days before deadline. School approval/Skolans medgivande (docx 63 kB)
  9. Submit proposal.

Support for preparatory overseas visits

Representatives from KTH can receive support for travel and subsistence expenses when visiting overseas partners in order to plan for application to the Erasmus+ pogrammes that enables cooperation with the so-called partner countries; Erasmus+ Capacity Building, Joint Master Degrees and non-European Mobility of Individuals. Applications for financial support are made continuously through UHR.

Examples of previously granted projects

COSSE – Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering

Granted Erasmus Mundus Master project with five intakes (2010-2016). Out of the 72 registered students, 65 (90%) graduated with double degrees from two of the partner universities: KTH, TU Delft, TU Berlin and FAU Erlangen. After graduation around half of the students went on to doctoral studies, the other half are working within the field. The cooperation has also led to jointly developed internet-based bridging courses in order to prepare admitted students for the entry to the master’s programme. Also C++ courses for Scientific Computing were introduced to prepare the students for the 2nd year mobility.

THRUST - Turbomachinery Aeromechanical University Training

Granted Erasmus Mundus Master project with five intakes (2010-2016). Out of 82 registered students, 77 (94%) graduated with either a joint degree certificate from KTH and University of Liège/Aristotle University of Thessaloniki or double degrees from KTH and Duke University in the U.S. After graduating 70% have jobs related to the field, 30% have started further PhD studies. For the joint programme, the partnership has used part of the funds to develop virtual courses delivered to the students by the partner universities during the first year.
