Upgrading of KTH Windows
About the upgrade of the KTH Windows computer platform, which is being upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
General information
During the winter and spring of 2025-26, an upgrade of all KTH Windows 10 platform computers that follow KTH IT's upgrade requirements will begin. We will upgrade these to Windows 11 and the goal is to be ready by midsummer. The upgrade is taking place in stages.
Possible special cases or deviations will need to be handled separately.
Note that some platform computers are already running Windows 11, which applies to users who have been newly employed at KTH this winter and have received a new computer in connection with this.
Approximate time frame for the upgrade
Exact weeks may be adjusted slightly depending on how the rollout progresses. For some parts of University Administration, the rollout has already begun.
| School/University Administration/Student union | Scheduled start | Estimated time frame |
|---|---|---|
| University Administration (EDO) | Week 10 | Week 10-11 |
| University Administration (KTHB and SÄK) | Week 12 | Week 12-13 |
| University Administration (Other) | Week 14 | Week 14-15 |
| EECS, SCI, CBH schools and THS (Student union) | Week 17 | Week 17-18 |
| ITM school | Week 19 | Week 19-20 |
| ABE school | Week 21 | Week 21-22 |
Why do we need to upgrade?
- Windows 10 has reached the end of its lifecycle.
- For enterprise and school environments, regular support ended on October 14, 2025.
- Security updates are now temporarily delivered via Extended Security Updates (ESU), but this is a limited transitional solution.
Additional significant reasons:
- Windows 11 offers improved security as it is created with higher security requirements by default than what Windows 10 previously offered.
- Windows 11 will be supported for many years to come.
- Better adaptation to today's modern and mobile working methods, which, among other things, provides better integration with KTH OneDrive, Office 365 and other important apps and functions.
How does the upgrade work?
The upgrade to Windows 11 is being carried out as a so-called in-place upgrade (IPU), which means that the operating system is updated directly on your existing computer without the need for a new installation.
Some of the benefits of an in-place upgrade includes:
- that you will keep your current programs and settings
- that the upgrade has less impact on your daily work compared to a reinstallation which can take longer and also does not retain all programs and settings.
