Research and teaching conducted at the Department of Physics span from basic science topics in condensed matter physics, biophysics, mathematical physics, atomic, nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics to applied areas such as medical imaging, nuclear reactor physics, nuclear reactor technology and nuclear power safety.
The Nuclear Physics Group within the Department of Physics at KTH in collaboration with SSM – The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, seeks an outstanding scientist to conduct research on the development and demonstration of novel multi-sensor, neutron and gamma-ray detection and imaging systems for applications in nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation, nuclear security, environmental research and related areas.
The project involves a research focus area in applied nuclear physics for the combination of nuclear detection and imaging methodologies for enhanced sensitivity and sensitivity in detection and non-destructive analysis of nuclear materials in different environments, in particular for nuclear security and nuclear safeguards applications.
KTH and SSM support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission in developing methods and techniques to enhance international safeguard methods focused on techniques for non-destructive analysis of nuclear material. The results are intended to be used for both developing novel technologies as well as developing international regulations within the area of nuclear safeguards and security.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in nuclear physics and should demonstrate relevant experience in nuclear and radiation science and possess strong data analysis and scientific programming skills. Experience from using and developing Monte Carlo simulation tools for modelling radiation transport and detection with the code MCNP or similar is an advantage as well as experience of scientific programming with for example C ++, python, or Fortran. Experience from algorithm development, digital signal processing techniques, and advanced statistical analysis techniques is desired.
Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. An excellent command of the English language is required. We value accuracy, scientific integrity, excellent interpersonal skills and strong organizational ability highly.
Experience from active and/or passive interrogation methods for nuclear materials is a merit. Documented training from international programmes in nuclear safeguards and security is also an advantage. The successful candidate will show evidence of, or a strong potential for, the ability to carry out excellent research in an area that is relevant for the project.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal competence and suitability.
