KTH Royal Institute of Technology

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

The research activities of the Division of Decision and Control Systems are focused on system identification, control, machine learning and optimization of dynamical systems, with applications in autonomous systems, networked system, process control, modeling and control of bioprocesses, robotics and secure systems. The personel has a multicultural background and the working language is English. The division is internationally well established and is involved in many European and national research centers and projects. Industrial partners include ABB Corporate Research, ABB Process Automation, BillerudKorsnäs, Ericsson Research, and Scania. We have a large academic network and collaborate with researchers at MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford University, TU Eindhoven, and Université de Lyon among others. Automation and Control at KTH was ranked 15 in the world in the latest ARWU Shanghai ranking.

Job description

Learning Dynamical Systems is an area closely related to cyber-physical systems as well as real-time big data analytics, and it provides backbone algorithms for digitalization of industry and society. Together with researchers from Uppsala University, and with strong support from the Swedish Research Council, we are now building up the research environment NewLEADS for this core technology in autonomous systems with applications such as smart buildings, self-driving vehicles, and self-learning robots. NewLEADS consists of 7 senior researchers complemented by postdocs and PhD-students. As a postdoc in NewLEADS you will work together with researchers from the two schools.

We focus on theory development around three important themes: Fundamental techniques focuses on how to learn parsimonious models for dynamical systems in a statistical and computationally efficient way. Active and on-line learning concerns how to improve data-efficiency by actively controlling the excitation of the system in a sequential manner, possibly together with an application specific objective. Dynamical networked systems addresses issues of relevance to interconnected dynamical systems systems, a field rapidly increasing in importance thanks to the fast development of (wireless) communication technology and the Internet-Of-Things paradigm.

For this position we are looking for 1-3 postdocs.

What we offer

  • International workplace.
  • A leading technical university that creates knowledge and expertise for a sustainable future.
  • Here you get colleagues with high ambitions in an open, curious and dynamic environment.

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. or be near Ph.D. on a for the positions relevant topic, such as, e.g., system identification, statistical learning theory, machine learning or control theory.

The successful applicant should have an outstanding research and publication record. Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills are a requirement. We are looking for strongly motivated persons, who are able to work both independently and in collaboration with others. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to present and publish research results.
