Guides to functions in Canvas

Here you can find manuals and recommendations regarding how to use the different functions in the Canvas menu.

Home

The first thing that is displayed in a Canvas course is “Home”, which means that the home page plays a big role in the students first impressions. On the Home page you can also find a sidebar with good functions at the course start.

Modules

Students want a structure that is easy to understand and to be able to find all course material in one place in Canvas. This is very easy if the function “Modules” in Canvas is used. This guide includes recommendations for how to use Modules and how to adjust them for your course.

Pages

If you as a teacher shares documents with your students, you can use “Pages” in Canvas instead. This is because KTH recommends that information should be uploaded on a page in Canvas, rather than as a document. Pages can have pictures, videos, links, lists, tables and much more.

Syllabus

The course memo is important to students before, during and after the course. This is why we recommend that you write a short summary of the course memo using the function “Syllabus” in Canvas and also links to the course memo.

Assignments

Graded assignments are a necessity in all courses and can look very different, it can be everything from essays to web design. The function “Assignments” in Canvas can be used for all different types of assignments. It is possible to specify how Grades should be displayed, which submission types are allowed, due dates and much more.

Quizzes

To create a good quiz can be a difficult task. Here you can find information about the two quiz functions in Canvas, New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes. You can also find information about how to set good settings for the quiz, create good questions, manage question banks, moderate quizzes and vary assignments between students by randomizing questions.

Grades

“Grades” in Canvas is shorty presented in the Gradebook for teachers and students. A more detailed grading is made using SpeedGrader for both assignments and quizzes, but in slightly different ways. It is also possible to automate the transfer grades from Canvas to Ladok.

People

Through the function “People” in Canvas, you as a teacher get an overview of which users and roles are in your course room or examination room. It is also possible to divide the rooms into groups and sections. Normally users are added automatically to Canvas rooms through Ladok or KOPPS, but it is also possible to add users manually, even users without a KTH-account.

Announcements

Publishing an announcement through the “Announcements” function in Canvas is an easy way to distribute important information to all students at once; either to the whole course or to specific sections.

Discussions

Two-way communication with and between students works well using the “Discussions” function in Canvas. Discussion forums can be used for several purposes, everything from grading to social uses.
