Other three question types in Canvas New Quizzes

This page presents the question types "Hot spot", "File upload" and "Stimulus". All question types are described together with information on recommended use and a link to more detailed information on how each question is created. Information on the remaining question types in New Quizzes can be found via the listing at the bottom.

Hot Spot

"Hot spot" can be used for questions about details in pictures, diagrams, coordinate systems etc. The answer to the question is given by the student placing a marker on the picture that matches the area that the teacher has indicated as correct.

Recommended use of "Hot Spot"

An image can often tell more than a thousand words, if used at the right time. The use of pictures need to be well thought through. Variation in the form of an explanation with an image can make more people understand, but an image can also be difficult for those who have a functional variation for the eyesight, such as blindness or color blindness. This question type does not work with most accessibility aids.

File upload

File upload enables a teacher to ask for any number and types of files to be uploaded. This question type requires moderation/review from the teacher so no score can be assigned automatically. At this point (January 2021) it is not possible to use SpeedGrader to assess files that are submitted through a quiz. Thus, it is better to use Canvas Assignments for file uploads.

More information at Canvas community about the question type File upload .

Recommended use of "File upload"

The advantage of uploading files is that in a quiz with multiple attempts you can add several versions of the same document without the older document being deleted or needing to create several assignments. You also get statistics on when the document was uploaded and the possibility to give feedback on every version. Since quiz submissions are individual, the function is not suitable for group assignments, as the group members cannot access each other's documents.

Stimulus

This is a function which enables instructions, text, web links, pictures etc. in the middle of the quiz. Please note that if the question type "Stimulus" is to be visible it needs to be connected to follow-up questions.

Recommended use of "Stimulus"

Stimulus can be useful when the same quiz has different content and therefore should be differentiated to be clear. It can also be useful to give the students material where they adapt and deepen their knowledge with the follow-up questions.
