Canvas in 8 easy steps

If you are a teacher and new user of Canvas there are some basic parts that are good to get started with. To your help you have the self-study course "Canvas @ KTH - An introductory course". Here you will learn how to navigate in Canvas, structure your course room, work on assignments and assessment and much more. Below is a quick guide in eight steps to help you get started.

"Canvas @ KTH - An introductory course"

  "Canvas@KTH - An introductory course" (external page)  is a self-study course all KTH teachers have access to. You can see it (as a course room) in the course overview when you are logged in to Canvas. Here you will find guides, films and instructions divided into 3 modules and "8 steps". The modules also have exercises so you get the chance to test yourself on building a course room, trying out different functions and creating content. The content in the self-study course is in English. Here you also find a discussion forum where you can discuss and share ideas with other teachers.

Below is a short version of the "8 steps" that will help you get started with Canvas. Some of the links lead directly to the self-study course.

1. How To navigate

The Global Navigation Menu is located on the left side in Canvas and through it you will quickly get to functions that you often use. Here you will find: Account, Dashboard, Courses, Groups, Calendar, Inbox, Commons and the Help menu. Read more about navigation in Canvas (Canvas@KTH) .

2. Structure you course room

Modules are the main idea on how to organize your course content. You can choose to divide it by weeks, themes, or whatever organizational structure that works for your course. With modules, you are essentially creating a flow of what you would like your students to do. Once you created modules, you add content items. It is also possible to set "compulsory modules" and add "requirements" to a module, for example, indicate that students must complete one module before they can see the next.

3. Assignments and calender

I Canvas you work with student groups and "Assignments Index". You can create assignments for your students in the course room's calendar. There is also a possibility of peer review that complements the Canvas native peer review tool.

5. Good to know - Student view, recover deleted objects and advanced pages

As a teacher you can see a student view of the course room when you have created it. Its also possible to recover accidentally deleted objects and if you are looking for some more advanced features for your pages. 6. Student groups

It is possible to create different groups within a course, which can be used for assignments, discussions etc. You can give different groups different assignments or different due dates for the same assignment. A group can be manually created by you or automatically by the system.

7. Grades

In Canvas, the student receives feedback and sees assessments and results. The results should be regarded as preliminary and not as the examiner's grading decision which is communicated via Ladok. This is important for you as a teacher to know, from a legal perspective, because as soon as a result is graded there are stricter rules for how it can be changed.
