Project number

This KTH-wide project was implemented within the Future Education programme (project no. 2325-KTH).

Project context

The fact that many students are involved in student social life can give KTH a competitive edge over other higher education institutions in Swedish admissions. In the same way, student social life can be important for retention and student completion; that students stay in their education and ultimately graduate.

The purpose of the project is to investigate what is most relevant to students' engagement in student social life – firstly that they get involved and feel that they have a social context, and secondly that they spend time on campus (also outside of class time), which contributes to a vibrant campus. Some examples:

• Which events and activities (ranging from periodic major events such as welcome weeks and ‘spex’, to ongoing activities such as monitoring of students’ interests, section newspapers, sports, music, e-sports, etc.) are most important in student social life?
• Which premises (e.g. learning environments, section premises, spex workshop etc.) are most important for events and activities to be carried out and which factors (location, accessibility, equipment, administration/booking etc.) have the most influence?
• What other resources do students need to conduct their activities and create added value for the students?
• What works well and what obstacles are there at the moment? What conditions for engagement are most important and how do they affect the form of engagement?

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to increase knowledge about the social life of students, its components and what obstacles and opportunities exist today, by conducting an interview study. KTH is a large university with four campuses that are geographically spread out, the programmes can belong to different schools (sometimes more than one) and in addition, different sections/associations have different traditions. The study will give all these groups the opportunity to express themselves.

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

• Inventory of study social components (premises, activities, etc.)
• Interview templates
• Interviews conducted
• Analysis and report.
