AI in KPU – complementary pedagogical education – and other university education

The project involves strengthening KPU students’ competence in using AI in educational contexts through participation in AI-related activities throughout the academic year, encouraging reflection on their own AI use in studies and their future teaching practice.

The principle framework with mapped principles colour-marked.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P3. Active student-centred learning

P1. Essential knowledge of the subject

P4. Assessment and examination for learning

P9. A developing educational culture

P10. Continuous competence development in the teaching role

P13. Integrated lifelong learning

Project number

This project is implemented at the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2624-ITM)

Project context

Today, there is a growing problem with AI-related cheating in the different programmes for supplementary teacher education (KPU) and across KTH. In teacher education, the problem has so far been handled by prohibiting students from using AI and by making greater use of written on-campus exams or oral exams. Written on-campus exams and oral exams are not wrong in themselves, but the disadvantage of handling the problem in this way is that students do not receive any education in AI in teaching contexts. They will need this in their future profession, since they will become teachers themselves and will need to handle problems related to AI cheating in their role as teachers. In addition, AI also offers major opportunities in teaching contexts, which students also need to learn about.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to increase student’s competence in AI, give them experience of using AI in different ways, and provide opportunities to reflect on how this has affected their learning during the programme.

This can both support their own learning and prepare them well to handle problems and create opportunities using AI in their own teaching when they enter the classroom as qualified teachers after one or one and a half years at KTH.

Raising and discussing the opportunities and risks of using AI early in the programme can reduce the risk of AI-related cheating. Instead of simply prohibiting AI, opportunities are created for students to learn when and how AI can be used responsibly.

Project results (output)

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

  • Concrete intended learning outcomes related to AI that students in teacher education are expected to achieve.
  • A lesson plan for an introductory session that includes both an introduction to what AI is and discussion tasks.
  • Completed assignments or working methods where students use AI in different ways during their programme.
  • A lesson plan for a concluding activity where students reflect on their own AI use through the tasks and working methods they have used.

Intended learning outcomes, lesson plans, tasks, and working methods can, with some adaptation, be used in several of KTH’s programmes and by KTH’s teachers.
