Electronic Defence – a multi-Institution course with industrial commitment

The project involves a new course in Electronic Defence in collaboration between KTH, FHS and leading Swedish defence industry. The course will be the first joint initiative between KTH and FHS. It can serve as a model for teacher-student interaction between the two, including joint use of the EECS makerspace.

The principle framework with mapped principles colour-marked.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P1. Essential knowledge of the subject

P2. Ability to handle wicked problems for the sustainable societal development

P5. Available experimental environments

P13. Integrated lifelong learning

This project is implemented at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2616-EECS)

Project context

Educational needs and the demands from society and our industrial partners change and develop over time, often independently of one another. They also do not always coincide with KTH’s cutting-edge expertise. Today, however, there is a situation where all these aspects meet: the need* for a course in electronic defence has been raised by KTH’s strategic industrial partner within the Swedish defence industry. The learning content is strongly interdisciplinary and requires the combined technical and teaching expertise of KTH, the Swedish Defence University (FHS) and the defence industry. The collaboration between these two higher education institutions is not only groundbreaking in jointly creating a new course, but the course will also be open to students at both KTH and FHS. The course can also serve as a model for teacher and student interaction, primarily between KTH and FHS, for example through the joint use of EECS makerspace.

* Electronic defence technology is not covered by the Master’s programme “Cybersecurity”, which focuses on software.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to adapt EECS’s specialised educational courses to changing societal and industrial partner needs by creating a course in Electronic Defence.

Project results (output)

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

  • A new course at second-cycle level (master’s level), jointly organised by KTH, FHS and the leading Swedish defence industry, to be offered for the first time in 2027 as a pilot course for students from KTH and FHS.
  • Integration of the course into the course offering for the two KTH Master’s programmes “Cybersecurity” and “Electromagnetics, Fusion and Space Engineering”, as well as into a programme at FHS.
  • A new model for joint educational activities through regular coordination meetings on educational development between KTH and FHS.
  • A new model for adapting KTH’s education to long-term needs among strategic industrial partners, through regular meetings, to adapt KTH’s specialised education to societal needs.
  • The model for joint educational activities, particularly between KTH and FHS, may lead to larger coordinated educational adaptation and more joint courses. The model for adapting KTH’s education to long-term needs of strategic industrial partners, together with the industrial partners’ direct involvement in course delivery, can be applied to other strategic partnerships and educational areas.
