Hybrid entrepreneurial makerspace ecosystem – HEME
The project involves developing and piloting a model that combines physical makerspaces with a structured, pedagogical and digitally coordinated platform. The model enables interdisciplinary, challenge-driven innovation learning while creating a scalable model for KTH.
Project context
KTH is establishing makerspaces as key infrastructures for experiential and student-centred learning. At ITM, several related initiatives are emerging, but there is a risk of fragmentation, limited accessibility, and weak integration with entrepreneurship and real value creation. Physical infrastructure needs to be combined with a structured pedagogical and digital coordination model and integrated with existing ITM and KTH makerspace initiatives.
Purpose (outcome)
The purpose of the project is to operationalise KTH’s makerspace initiative at ITM, combining physical infrastructure with a structured pedagogical and digital coordination model, by developing a hybrid entrepreneurial makerspace ecosystem (HEME).
Expected outcomes:
- Improved quality of entrepreneurship and innovation education
- Increased access to both physical and hybrid makerspace learning
- Stronger connection between education, experimentation, and value creation
- Better integration of ITM initiatives with KTH-wide makerspace efforts.
Measurement indicators include:
- Number of courses using the hybrid model
- Student learning outcomes and engagement
- Utilisation of physical and hybrid makerspace components
- Level of cross-programme collaboration.
Project results (output)
The project will deliver the following concrete results:
- A pilot* physical makerspace setup/capability aligned with ITM needs
- A functioning hybrid (digital + physical) makerspace
- A pedagogical framework for hybrid makerspace-based learning
- Course-integrated assignments in selected courses within the Master’s programmes Technology-based Entrepreneurship (TTBEM) and Industrial Management (TINEM)
- A governance framework (IP, access, safety, assessment)
- A documented implementation and integration model
- A final report and presentation (Storträffen).
* The project is positioned as a pilot in 2026, testing how physical and digital infrastructures can be coordinated into a coherent pedagogical system.
