Maxi-studios and multimedia for enhanced learning
The project involves ensuring that the use of maxistudios leads to enhanced learning (e.g., enhances comprehension, retention, and activity level) rather than simply increased media production. Accessibility, attractiveness, and research-based multimedia learning are in focus.
Project context
This project is a continuation of the previous project Further development of the Maxistudio at KTHB (2502-KTH) within the Future Education programme. The Maxi-studio in the KTH Library is ready and teaching staff has begun to use it to support the development of courses with student-centred pedagogy. Initial feedback shows that the Maxistudio can improve and simplify the work of teaching and learning, especially by making it easier to produce pedagogically well thought out digital course material.
There are great opportunities to create research-based pedagogical support for teachers in this work, by building on experiences and materials from the course LD1005 Digital Presentations and Video in Teaching, where knowledge of video production and pedagogical design has already been developed. Existing material from the course can be generalised and further developed.
A booking process for teachers has been developed within the previous project, but student accessibility needs to be improved. How can maxi-studios be made visible, attractive and, above all, booked by students? Ideally, this should be possible both for assignments in students' courses (with higher priority) and as an opportunity for voluntary work (cf. the KTH Makerspace concept).
KTH currently has two maxi-studios (another one is located at ITM at Brinellvägen 68). Since detailed procedures may differ between the two, this project focuses primarily on what is completely common, with the aim of achieving a higher degree of systematicity and user-friendliness in the maxi-studio concept. In cases where the two maxi-studios differ, the project is based on the Maxi-studio at KTHB, which will be the "master" for the work.
Purpose (outcome)
The purpose of the project is to ensure that the use of maxi-studios leads to enhanced learning rather than just increased media production. By developing evidence-based and scientifically based guidelines based on multimedia learning and cognitive load, students and teachers can use video in a way that strengthens understanding, retention and active learning. The project also aims to increase the accessibility and attractiveness of maxi-studio use at KTH.
Project results (output)
The project results are general, scalable and user-friendly working methods and pedagogical resources to increase the integration of maxi-studios in teaching, through student assignments such as final presentations and project work. The work is based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and established principles for effective multimedia design. The project will deliver the following concrete results:
- Canvas module for teachers (evidence-based pedagogical guide). The same knowledge is also documented in text/image form (document);
- Turnkey Canvas module(s) for insertion into course rooms (which can be easily used by teachers in their respective courses) for student assignments with student instructions, examination rubric, etc.;
- Process for studio booking for students;
- Increase the visibility of maxi-studios to teachers, students and other KTH employees (in collaboration with KTH communication/VS);
- Follow-up of pilot use (evaluation with the various roles in the process as well as of use and outcome);
- Final report.
