Towards AI Literacy and Confidence – TALC
The project involves training students to use AI effectively and responsibly in a scalable and engaging learning environment (Canvas and GitHub). It aims to reduce anxiety about AI use while strengthening skills important for future studies and professional life.
Project context
Students’ concerns about using AI can be just as problematic as overuse or inappropriate use. Competent and critical use of AI will be an important part of students’ future studies and professional lives. Although it is easy to assume that students will surpass us in adopting AI, this development will not be evenly distributed. A central concern among some students is that they are afraid that using AI will harm their learning or lead to problems. Although overdependence and inappropriate use are real risks, refraining from using AI is also problematic.
An engaging learning environment is needed where students feel safe to experiment and learn from the results. At the same time, we have so many courses and AI policies that it becomes difficult for students to identify opportunities to independently develop AI skills without negatively affecting their learning or creating a risk of academic misconduct.
This project is related to the project “AI First”.
Purpose (outcome)
The purpose of the project is to create an interactive study environment that is:
- Safe, supportive, and self-directed for students, by training them to use AI effectively and responsibly in Canvas and GitHub. This gives students the opportunity to reflect on how the effort shifts from creating a specific result to critically evaluating a result when AI is used for problem-solving.
- Open and scalable in terms of both administration and costs, by making use of the AI services already licensed by KTH as well as curating other services that are free of charge for students, to minimise operating costs.
The intended outcome is that students are provided with an environment that helps them develop AI skills in a focused and productive way.
Project results (output)
The project will deliver the following concrete results:
- Learning outcomes for the module, as well as evaluated alternatives for the learning environment.
- An open module implemented in Canvas, with assignments for AI use and supporting learning agents, that have been tested in the learning environment with student testers and refined based on feedback.
- A completed survey for broader student evaluation.
- An analysis with identified strengths and areas for improvement, along with formulated recommendations for further development and possible scaling.
