Project-based courses 2.0

The project develops workshops for project courses to address complex problems, use experimental environments effectively and ensure equal participation. The goal is that all 3- and 5-year programmes, and many Master’s programmes, include at least one redesigned project course.

The principle framework with mapped principles colour-marked.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P2. Ability to handle wicked problems for a sustainable societal development

P3. Active student-centred learning

P5. Available experimental environments

P12. Broadened recruitment and participation

Project number

This project is implemented at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2617-EECS)

Project context

Project courses are important parts of engineering programmes, especially now that theoretical knowledge is available online or can be provided by AI. At the same time, project courses face new demands to train students in addressing wicked problems, using the school’s experimental environments, and ensuring inclusive group work. Good solutions are available in some courses, but these best practices are not shared systematically.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to create the necessary and shared conditions for all programmes at the school to have project courses that systematically address the new demands.

A measurable intended outcome is that every 3-year and 5-year programme, as well as many of the Master’s programmes, has at least one project course with a new design that meets the requirements.

Project results (output)

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

  • A series of workshops* with participant from at least 10 project courses, covering:
    • Workshop 1: Wicked problems
    • Workshop 2: Group work
    • Workshop 3: Experimental environments, including visits to the school’s makerspaces
    • Workshop 4: Peer review of development plans
  • A final seminar during the school’s teaching day.
  • Information material or web pages on the design of project courses.

* Each workshop will include invited experts, preferably participants from previous Future Education projects with a relevant focus.

The project will be coordinated with the work on the school’s experimental environments.
