Showcase KTH Architecture - demonstrating the design studio pedagogy

The project involves creating a physical exhibition environment that shows KTH and the public the results, both what (architecture students' design work) and how (the design studio pedagogy) – of the model for the laboratory and experimental learning that KTH has excelled in for almost 200 years.

The principle framework with mapped principles colour-marked.

Mapped principles

The project is mapped to the following framework principles:

P5. Available experimental environments

P2. Ability to handle wicked problems for a sustainable societal development

P3. Active student-centred learning

P6. Vibrant campus

P9. A developing educational culture

Project number

This project is implemented at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment (ABE) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2602-ABE)

Project context

KTH Architecture has long had well-established and large experimental learning environments for the department’s students in architecture, sustainable urban planning, and lighting design. The environments consist of three studio floors with approximately 500 individual study places for work on design projects, including drawings, image production, model making, exhibition mounting, and similar activities. There is also a well-equipped model workshop with good conditions for woodwork, plaster casting, and digital fabrication (3D printer, laser cutter, and CNC milling machine), as well as a robotic arm and a qualified lighting design lab.

KTH Architecture also has long experience of applying the pedagogical model of the field of architecture for laboratory-based and experimental learning within these experimental learning environments, namely design studio pedagogy, see the project The design studio's pedagogical landscape in built environment (2303-ABE) .

There is great potential to demonstrate KTH’s excellence in laboratory-based and experimental learning over almost 200 years, both to KTH and to the general public. This can contribute to a broader image of KTH’s identity and self-image, as well as to the overall campus environment.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of the project is to:

  • demonstrate KTH’s excellence in laboratory-based and experimental learning over almost 200 years
  • broaden the image of KTH’s identity and self-image in line with the current principles of the change process in Future Education
  • contribute to liveliness in the campus environment
  • create knowledge about the architecture programmes (all ABE school programmes within the field of architecture*) and bring them closer to the rest of KTH.

This will be done by creating a physical exhibition environment for both what (the architecture students’ design work) and how (design studio pedagogy), open to KTH and the general public.

* The first cycle education Degree programme in Architecture (ARKIT) and the second cycle education in Architecture (TARKM), Sustainable Urban Planning and Design (THSSM), and Architectural Lighting Design (TLODM).

Project results (output)

The project will deliver the following concrete results:

  • A concrete and physical spatial exhibition environment, a very large display cabinet based on exhibition stands and shelving systems, including lighting, which forms a clear hub for presenting KTH’s design studio model. The location is either KTH Entré or the ground floor of the School of Architecture.
  • A diversity of models and works in different sizes, materials, textures, colours, and forms, which continuously demonstrate and make accessible selected parts of the course content across the great variety of courses in the field of architecture. A selection of student models and courses will be made.
  • A proposal for a maintenance plan for the continued development and operation of the exhibition environment.

Time plan
