New feature in KTH Import Exams: automatic search and import of scanned exams

Starting March 2nd, it will be easier for you as a teacher to import scanned exams into Canvas. A new feature in Import Exams automatically finds and imports exams that have been scanned after the first run for up to 30 days. If there are new exams, you can see it in the exam room in Canvas and the feature will also notify you of the new exams at 9 a.m. the next day.

What is KTH Import Exams?

KTH Import Exams helps you to import scanned written exams into Canvas so that they can be assessed digitally in SpeedGrader. The function can be used by people who have the roles of teacher, examiner or course coordinator in the examination room.

Why is the feature needed?

Exams are scanned in batches, which means that some exams can be scanned in earlier than others. The number of written exams can also differ from the number of course participants. As a teacher, it has therefore been difficult to know whether all exams are imported when Import Exams is run the first time and when to import the remaining exams. The new search and import feature solves this problem.

What will change in Import Exams on March 2nd?

After you have run Import Exams as usual, the new feature will automatically find and import new exams into Canvas. If new exams have been scanned in, you will receive a notification in Canvas the next day at 09:00. The notification is only sent to the person who started the import.

The new feature will check for exams three times a day for 30 days, but you will receive a maximum of one notification per day and only when there are new exams. It will also be indicated in Import Exams if new exams have been imported.

It is recommended that you check Import Exams for new imports to see any error messages.

What does it look like in Import Exams?

The message sent when new exams have been imported is short and concise: “You have new scanned exams for course [room name], check Import Exams for possible error messages:” followed by a link to Import Exams in the room.

In Import Exams, the information that is displayed after you have imported exams has been updated, that is, what is under the heading “Verify results”.

Now it will say the following:

  • at what times the function looks for new exams (10:00, 13:00 and 16:00)
  • when you receive the message (9:00)
  • the number of imported exams
  • when exams were last imported to Canvas.

You can still import more exams manually and any error messages will be displayed at the end of the page.
