Spectral imaging provides an innovative approach of computed tomography, allowing the extraction of multiple imaging sequences, derived from a unique CT acquisition. Both multiple energy-level reconstructed acquisition, and material decomposition images are now routinely produced by these high-end CT systems. As a result, it has been already shown that spectral CT can improve the detectability of tumor lesions showing increased angiogenesis, and could even match the functional behavior of various tumors.

However several challenges still have to be overcome. Using spectral CT challenges both the acquisition instrumentation, the definition of the optimal iodine load, and the selection of the most appropriate reconstruction algorithms to optimize image quality.

The lecture will review current advances of the clinical impact of spectral imaging CT in oncology, and especially in abdominal oncology, while highlighting current limitations and questions still unsolved.

Pr Alain LUCIANI, MD, PhD, is professor of radiology at the Faculte de Sante of Créteil, University Paris Est Creteil (UPEC), working in the medical imaging department of the Henri MONDOR university hospital, GHU APHP University Hospitals Henri Mondor. He is medical director of the University Medical Department (DMU) Fonctions Images et Interventionnel Thérapeutique (FIxIT).

Former Secretary General of the French Academic College of Radiology (CERF) and former President of SIAD (National Society of Abdominal and Digestive Imaging), he is currently Vice-President of the French Society of Radiology (SFR), responsible for its Research committee.

His research focuses on liver imaging and the development of functional imaging for their characterization. Professor LUCIANI is also involved in upstream research on imaging of liver diseases within the INSERM U955 Equipe 18 research team.
