Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) promotes long-term, independent research in the natural sciences, technology and medicine. Since its inception in 1917, KAW has approved grants of over SEK 35 billion – including SEK 2.2 billion a year in recent years – for excellent research and education in Sweden.

Project grants 2024

The Foundation supports projects with high scientific potential. Projects should generally be of a basic science nature and focused on a coherent research question, where the complementary competencies of the participating scientists allow new possibilities to approach the chosen research question. Projects usually have a budget of SEK 15–40 million, with a duration of three to five years.

In accordance with KAW guidelines, KTH will conduct its own initial prioritisation and selection of candidates. An internal pre-proposal must be submitted to the Research Support Office  no later than 13 September 2023.

Instructions for the pre-proposal (pdf 161 kB)

Priority to fully completed applications will be made by a panel consisting of representatives from the faculty, led by the Vice President for Research. This panel of experts is appointed by the Dean of the faculty in consultation with KTH’s Faculty Council, and is tasked with preparing a priority list of candidates for the President.

Application period: 7 January 2024 until 1 February 2024.
The call is open every second year. KTH can nominate 10 researchers.

Program for Mathematics 2024

The aim of the Program for Mathematics is for Sweden to reclaim its leading position internationally by offering the best young researchers global experience, and recruiting young as well as more experienced mathematicians to Sweden. In addition, there is considerable demand for mathematicians with PhDs in the academic as well as the commercial and industrial fields. The Foundation will support prominent researchers in mathematics during 2014–2029. The funding amounts to a total of SEK 650 million. This program consists of several parts:

  • Nomination of international guest researchers (guest professor) (support letter from President required)
  • Postdoctoral Scholarship Program in Mathematics for outgoing researchers with a Swedish doctoral degree (no support letter required)
  • Postdoctoral Scholarship Program in Mathematics for researchers from outside Sweden (support letter from President required)

Please note that if you need a support letter from the President, you must contact the Research Support Office  no later than 13 September 2023.

Application period: 1 September 2023 until 5 October 2023.
The call is open every year.

Wallenberg Scholars 2023 – nominations

Universities can apply for support for profiling by nominating individual researchers, who through their research and development potential are of the highest international class and are expected to contribute to strengthening the current profile of the research area at their university. This is freely available support for the individual’s research activities. The intention is that the selected researchers should be able to work with a high level of ambition to secure even better international impact for their research, and have an opportunity to invest in bolder and more long-term projects.

In accordance with KAW guidelines, KTH will conduct its own initial prioritisation and selection of candidates. KTH may submit nine candidates, of whom at least four of the underrepresented gender. Each head of school may nominate up to six candidates, of whom at least 40 per cent from the underrepresented gender. It is a plus if nominated researchers have previously received large grants such as ERC grants, KAW projects, KAW Fellows or other significant grants in their fields. The selected candidates submit their CV (max. 3 pages) to the Research Support Office  no later than 31 January 2023. It is then the Vice President for Research (or equivalent) who selects which nine candidates may submit their applications.

The call opens on 1 March 2023 with a deadline of 12 May 2023.
The call is open every fourth year. KTH can nominate nine researchers.

Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2023

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation finances a long-term programme for young researchers, Wallenberg Academy Fellows. The programme encompasses young researchers in medicine, natural sciences, technology, humanities and social sciences. Since 2017, Fellows have been called every two years. KTH will be allowed to nominate 12 Fellows according to the principle that an internal candidate can be nominated for each international nomination.

In accordance with KAW guidelines, KTH will conduct its own initial prioritisation and selection of candidates. An internal pre-proposal must be submitted to the Research Support Office  by October 3, 2022.
