KTH Digicertus Exam – Writing time settings

Published Mar 05, 2024

If you plan to examine your students using a digital exam and Canvas, it is important to know it is not possible to extend the writing time in Canvas during an ongoing exam. Therefore, when planning your exam, make sure to set the writing time in Canvas so there is a margin for possible delays.

Settings in Canvas

When you plan your Quiz or Assignment in Canvas, you can choose the examination's start time, end time and a maximum limit for shifting the writing time. Canvas clearly shows who submitted late, i.e. after the end time but within the limit for shifting writing time. After the maximum time limit is reached, students can no longer submit any answers.

It is important to set the maximum limit for writing time in Canvas so that there is a margin for possible delays. Once the exam has been started, it is not possible to change these settings.

The maximum limit for shifting time is determined based on the times exam invigilators and halls are booked. Ask your exam administration about what times are applicable for your occasion. We recommend booking halls and computer lockdown so that there is a margin of time both before and after the exam.

Canvas during lockdown

In order to change settings for writing times in Canvas during the exam in progress, students must log out and log in again in Canvas. When the exam is conducted during lockdown with KTH Digicertus Exam, the system's memory is cleared when logging out. This is the function that means that students cannot have saved digital text in a hidden mode and bring it with them to the exam. The fact that the memory is cleared upon logout/login means that it is not possible to change settings for writing time during an ongoing exam without the students' answers being lost.

It has always been recommended to set the maximum limit for writing time after the exam's end time so there is a margin for possible delays. However, we see a need for clarification, why this news is shared.
