Postdoc in Surface Texture Control for Precision Machining

School of Industrial Engineering and Management at KTH

Job description

Centre X is seeking a highly motivated and specialized postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in surface texture control and characterization for advanced manufacturing systems, specifically precision machining. This role is a key part of the industry-driven collaborative initiative, Centre X (Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next Generation Powertrain), a joint effort by KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Scania CV AB, and AB Volvo.

The primary objective of this position is to conduct in-depth, experimental and theoretical research on the control and characterization of surface integrity in high-performance machining processes. The successful candidate will focus on the fundamental understanding and application of ISO 25178, ISO 21920, ISO 16610 series, and other relevant 2D and 3D surface roughness/waviness parameters, their interdependencies, and their direct impact on component performance and reliability in powertrain applications. This includes linking machining parameters—such as tool geometry, cutting speed, feed rate, and lubrication—to resulting surface characteristics. The role requires deep knowledge of advanced machining processes, including hard turning, high-speed milling, and gear manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on understanding how process-induced surface features affect functional performance, such as fatigue and wear.

The candidate will utilize state-of-the-art 3D metrology techniques, including focus variation microscopy (FV) and white light interferometry (WLI), to quantitatively assess surface texture and integrity. Experience with computational tools for modelling and simulation of surface generation processes (e.g., FEM-based simulations) is essential. This role will contribute to both experimental and theoretical studies within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating closely with international and industrial partners to translate research into tangible, real-world solutions for advanced manufacturing.

During the period of employment, the postdoc will primarily focus on research, aiming to enhance their independence and create opportunities for further qualifications. The candidateresearcher may also be involved in teaching at various academic levels.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a thesis focused on a topic directly related to machining or manufacturing processes, obtained within the last three years. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Documented research expertise in surface texture control and precision machining, with a specific focus on surface formation trough advance manufacturing.
  • In-depth, hands-on knowledge of machining processes such as hard turning, high-speed milling, and gear manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced 3D surface metrology and characterization techniques (e.g., WLI, FV, CLSM, stylus profilometer) for industrial components.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced 3D surface characterization methods, deep understanding of surface textrue parameters, and application for industrial-like studies.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, sinced it is used within the work.
  • Proven experience in publishing scientific research in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  •  Previous work in a research environment with strong industrial collaboration within the automotive or aerospace sectors.
  • Previous experience in computational modelling of material removal and surface generation processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.
  • Teaching abilities.
  • An understanding of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a specific focus on gender equality.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
