Postdoc in Earth Observation for 3D Urban Mapping and Climate Resilience

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Built Environment

Job description

We are looking for a motivated postdoc to join our team working on the analysis of multi-modal Earth Observation data for 3D mapping. The position is part of a collaborative, funded project exploring how 3D mapping layers such as building and canopy height can be used to derive urban morphology types and assess their links to climate resilience.

You will develop and apply data-driven methods to integrate satellite, aerial, and ancillary geospatial data for urban characterization. The work includes developing algorithms, performing large-scale analyses, and collaborating with partners across disciplines in remote sensing, urban studies, and climate science.

You will be part of a dynamic research group with expertise in Earth Observation, geoinformatics, and machine learning, offering an excellent environment for advancing your research and building collaborations.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in remote sensing, geoinformatics, computer science, or a related field. Experience in handling multi-source EO data, 3D mapping, and geospatial analysis (e.g., LiDAR, SAR, or optical data) is highly valued.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Doctoral degree in remote sensing, geoinformatics, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • You have experience developing and applying deep learning models for Earth Observation data analysis.
  • You are fluent in Python and have solid experience with relevant machine learning and geospatial libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, GDAL, rasterio, and zarr.
  • You have experience with regression tasks and quantitative model evaluation.
  • You have a good publication record in leading remote sensing journals and/or computer vision conferences.
  • You can communicate clearly in English, both in writing and orally, as required in daily work

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • It’s commendable if you have experience handling large-scale data analysis using cloud-based infrastructures such as Google Earth Engine or similar platforms.
  • We prefer that you are familiar with assessing and interpreting uncertainty in deep learning models.
  • As a person, you are curious, self-driven, and enjoy working collaboratively in multidisciplinary research environments.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
