Postdoc in Brain–Robot Interfaces for Body-Centric Computing
School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH
Job description
We are looking for a well-motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Body-centric Operating System (BOS) project, funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). The BOS project aims to enable next-generation body-centric computing applications that integrate on-body and in-body sensors with embedded platforms and edge or cloud resources.
In particular, the researcher will contribute to the development of EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies. The objective is to design methods for decoding human motor intent and to integrate these capabilities into a demonstrator, where brain activity will be combined with other body signals to control assistive systems such as bionic/robotic hand prototypes. The work will involve the development of deep learning methods for multi-channel EEG time-series analysis, as well as research on representation learning and continual learning for subject-specific adaptation. The position also includes work on model compression and optimization for deployment on resource-constrained hardware, in close collaboration with other BOS partners.
The researcher will also engage in empirical research involving EEG data collection and analysis, software development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with researchers in robotics, embedded systems, networking, and neuroscience. The position may also involve supervision of students and participation in project coordination and dissemination activities. Candidates should have a strong background in machine learning and signal processing. Demonstrated interest in brain-computer interfaces and/or robotics is highly desirable.
This position offers an opportunity to engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research that bridges artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and embedded systems, contributing to the development of novel body-centric technologies for future assistive and interactive applications.
Qualifications
Requirements
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, applied physics, or a related field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
- Research expertise in at least one of the following areas: brain–computer interfaces, EEG/biomedical signal processing, machine learning for time-series, or robotics.
- A strong research record with high-quality publications in relevant fields.
- Documented strong programming skills, for example in Python and in deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- Ability to conduct independent research, plan and analyze experiments, and document results clearly.
- Excellent knowledge of the English language, such as written and oral skills since communication is essential of this role.
Preferred qualifications
- A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
- Documented experience with EEG/BCI (data collection, preprocessing, and modelling) and/or intent recognition for human–robot interaction.
- Experience with experimental work involving human participants and handling of multi-modal sensor data (e.g., motion capture, EMG, or other physiological signals).
- Experience with real-time implementations of ML models, or with integrating ML components into robotic or cyber-physical systems.
- Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
