Job description

Starting in 2031, Jupiter and its moons will be studied by two major space missions: ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) and NASA’s Europa Clipper. The KTH Division of Electromagnetism and Plasma Physics is involved in the Ultraviolet Spectrograph instruments on both missions, as well as in the Radio and Plasma Wave Instrument on Juice.

The position involves research focused on Jupiter’s magnetosphere and the Galilean moons, with the aim of contributing to the preparation for and analysis of measurements from these missions. The project will be based on data from space telescopes as well as archival data from previous and ongoing space missions, with the objective of characterizing the moons’ atmospheres and their interactions with the plasma in Jupiter’s magnetosphere.

The researcher is expected to primarily work on the analysis and interpretation of scientific data, as well as on publishing results in scientific journals and presenting them at international conferences. Some teaching duties may be included, such as supervision of degree projects and participation in exercises and laboratory sessions.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree 
  • Good knowledge of space physics, with a focus on outer planets, their moons, and the moons’ electromagnetic interactions.
  • Experience in data analysis of satellite data.
  • Strong ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, as this is required in the daily work.
  • Documented ability to conduct independent scientific work.

Preferred qualifications

  • Scientific proficiency.
  • Teaching ability.
  • Knowledge of satellite instrumentation and/or numerical plasma simulations.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.
