Research Engineer in Soft and Wearable Robotics

Job description

The Robot Design Lab at the Mechatronics Division at KTH is searching for a research engineer in the field of robot design and mechatronics with focus on soft and wearable robotics. The position is part of the ongoing flagship REMA project, Redefining Mobility for Aging Adults, which aims to develop new exoskeleton technologies for aging adults through the integration of soft robotics, sensing, actuation, adaptive control, and user-centered design.

The research engineer will contribute to the design, development, integration, and experimental evaluation of soft exoskeletons and their mechatronic systems. The work will span the development of soft robotic structures, sensing and actuation systems, mechanical and electromechanical integration, control, and the realization of functional robotic prototypes.

The work will include iterative development, assembly, verification, and validation through simulation and experimental testing. The research engineer will also participate in the planning and execution of experiments, analysis of results, student supervision, and dissemination of the research through scientific publications in relevant international conferences and journals.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • MSc degree in robotics, mechatronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in mechanical design and CAD software, such as SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Fusion 360, Solid Edge, or equivalent,
  • Experience in additive manufacturing (3D printing), prototyping, and assembly of robotic or mechatronic systems·.
  • Good programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python.
  • Experience in the integration and control of electrical motors and actuators in robotic or mechatronic systems.
  • Experience in experimental testing, verification, and validation of robotic or mechatronic prototypes.
  • Relevant scientific publications in international conferences and/or journals.
  • Good ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing, as it is required in the daily work.
  • Solid academic record and well-developed problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a group,

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in wearable robotics, exoskeletons, soft robotics, or physical human-robot interaction.
  • Experience in sensors, signal processing, and sensor integration for robotic or mechatronic systems.
  • Experience in automatic control theory and implementation, including motion and/or force control.
  • Experience in actuator and transmission design, including cable-driven or compliant mechanisms.
  • Experience in robot or multibody simulation software, such as Simscape Multibody, Gazebo, Webots, or CoppeliaSim.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element (FE) simulation of mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.
