Third-cycle subject: BIO Biotechnology – Cancer Bioinformatics

We are looking for a motivated PhD student to join our lab at KTH/SciLifeLab in Stockholm, where we focus on precision medicine, cancer progression, and the tumor microenvironment. This project aims to investigate factors contributing to tumor progression and their links to cancer progression, particularly in genitourinary cancers.

The project will involve bioinformatics-driven analyses, multi-omics data integration using machine learning, and potential collaborations with clinical and translational researchers. The project is well-suited for candidates with a background in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning with particular experience with cancer biology, or a related field.

Supervision: Assist Prof. Arian Lundberg and Prof. Cecilia Williams are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge
  • Strong background in cancer biology.
  • Master’s degree in bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related fields is required.
  • Proficiency in Bash, R, and/or Python is essential for data analysis and multiomics integration, and bioinformatics tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment is essential.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting findings and working with others, in English is required.
  • Two references from previous academic or research teams are required, one of which shall be your previous supervisor.

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently drive their work forward,
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach, and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.
  • strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • experience in interdisciplinary research and an interest in collaborating with researchers from different fields.
  • good understanding of scientific literature and the ability to understand and analyze complex information.
  • experience with machine learning and multiomics data integration.
  • skills in additional programming languages, bioinformatics pipelines, or tools are an advantage.
  • experience working with clinical or cancer patient data is advantageous.
  • experience with High Performance Computing (HPC) is an advantage.
  • a solid background in cancer research is preferred.
  • good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, as required in the daily work.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
