Dardel HPE Cray EX
Dardel is the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) system at PDC. Dardel is an HPE Cray EX supercomputer.
Parts of Dardel
The NAISS Dardel HPE Cray EX supercomputing system was installed at PDC in several steps. The first phase consisted of a CPU partition plus a storage system. Later, a GPU partition, extra CPUs and additional disk storage were added. The main system is housed in two rows of cabinets, and the storage is in several air-cooled cabinets to the rear of the main system.
Back row
The back row of the Dardel supercomputer is the row that was installed first. It has four double-door compute cabinets on the left and one cooling distribution unit (CDU), which controls the cooling water and hence the temperature of the system, in a narrower double-door cabinet on the right. This row of the system contains most of the CPU partition. The door panels feature two paintings by Nils Dardel: the “Dying Dandy” and part of the famously expensive painting “Waterfall”.
A shorter row of cabinets, which was installed later, sits in front of the back row. The disk storage is located in cabinets to the rear of the back row of the main system.

Front row
The front row of Dardel contains two double-door compute cabinets on the left end with a cooling distribution unit in a narrower double-door cabinet on the right end. The GPU partition of the system is housed in the leftmost double-door cabinet, and there are additional CPUs in the double-door cabinet in the middle of this row.
The images on the door panels are a portrait of Thora Dardel by Nils Dardel and “Crime of Passion”, another painting by Nils.
