Adaptive Simulations
Adaptive Simulations primarily worked with simulating flows. They provided adaptive algorithms that could automate the whole process of running flow simulations; their innovations were a spin-off from world-leading research conducted over the last decade by a team of researchers at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
The method underlying their automated flow simulations was based on quantitative a posteriori error estimation, which means that the user could specify what they wanted to compute and then the mesh of points that was used for the simulation was automatically optimized to compute the desired quantity to a prescribed tolerance with minimal computational cost. This was achieved by solving a so-called adjoint problem that connected local errors to the error in the quantity of interest. Adaptive Solutions had been offering their automated flow simulations to commercial customers and partnering with PDC had enabled them to run their software on extremely large simulation cases.
