Don't Bring an Instrument – Leakage as Resistance

Student-led Workshop

Published Apr 15, 2025

Reaktorhallen hosts the culmination of the Royal Institute of Art’s student-led course Don’t Bring an Instrument: Leakage as Resistance. Visitors are invited into a live sound experiment—an outcome of the course’s collective exploration of sound-making without traditional instruments.

Over the past two years, the course has investigated noise hierarchies across Stockholm, from construction sites to performance venues, bodies, and housing politics. This event responds through the concept of leakage—where sound, space, and presence slip beyond containment.

When and Where:

15.04.2025 16.00-18.00

KTH Reaktorhallen

What is this event about?

This event invites KKH students to apply the methods introduced during their course in a live, public setting—engaging directly with the concept of leakage. The presence of an audience amplifies this concept, turning the space into a site of shared experimentation.

Who is it for?

This event provides KKH students with a public platform to experiment, while offering the audience a layered encounter with the concept of leakage—sonically, through the arrangement of sound sources, and socially, as Reaktorhallen, 25 meters underground, was designed to prevent hazardous substance leakage. In contrast, the event invites the audience and their bodies to act as both receivers and transmitters of experimentation.

What do participants gain from this experience?

Participants experience a live sound experiment made by visual artists, where sound sources bleed into each other— subverting the room’s original function.

Why should one participate?

One should participate to engage with sound in an experimental context—where structured and unstructured noise converge, and the audience’s presence directly influences the experience. Set in Reaktorhallen, a space meant to contain rather than transmit, this event challenges traditional boundaries of sound, space, and interaction. Whether interested in experimental sound practices, collective creation, or how sound interacts with bodies and architecture, this is a chance to explore leakage as resistance in a live setting.

Host information

Don’t Bring an Instrument is a platform for participatory investigations into sound-based art, co-founded in 2023 by Aron Fogelström and Stella Dieden Richter, then students at the Royal Institute of Art. Since its launch, the platform has led to two courses—one in Spring 2024 and the next in Spring 2025. In each session, Don’t Bring an Instrument invites participants to shape the activities through conversation and sound-making experimentation.
