This project was implemented at the School of Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) within the Future Education programme (project no. 2411-CBH).

Project context

The future of the health sector is increasingly linked to being able to make decisions with the support of data and AI, based on data from healthcare, self-produced data, social data and other sources of health data. There is therefore a need for a new education programme that provides breadth and depth in the understanding of how data can be used to transform and streamline healthcare and improve people's health, for a long-term sustainable society. This involves different ways of processing and analysing data, and the necessary system methods to be able to put data-driven insights into a complex context. This also involves understanding what type of data exists, how it is structured and how to adapt it for effective analysis. “Data curation” and “data governance” should also be included, as should questions of ethics, law and personal privacy as well as other social and economic aspects.

Purpose (outcome)

The purpose of this project is to develop a new programme up to its initial admissions and to clearly link programme and course development to the principles of the Future Education programme, the President's decision on direction within the educational field, and the school's reform agenda. Programme graduates should be equipped to transform vast health data into actionable insights that improve patient outcomes, transform healthcare systems, and enable personalised medicine.

Project results (output)

  • Established courses for the entire programme, with appointed course coordinators and examiners.

  • Developed communication and recruitment material to attract students with a KTH background, from other universities with a Swedish Bachelor's degree, from selected European partner universities, and a few universities outside Europe.

  • Developed collaboration with community partners to offer meaningful projects in the project courses, as well as a selection of projects for thesis projects.
