KTH is recommended to continue as the principal of the Electrum laboratory in Kista. This is the conclusion of the investigation that has been carried out and which has resulted in a final report on the future of the laboratory.

"It has been thoroughly investigated in several stages over the past year and we can therefore be confident in the conclusion to retain the principal responsibility for the Electrum laboratory," says Anders Söderholm, President of KTH.

The report shows that the conditions for the laboratory's operations have changed since previous investigations of the laboratory. Among other things, the number of research projects and external funding have increased significantly, not least through the European semiconductor initiative Chips JU, in which the Electrum Laboratory participates. This in turn is expected to increase academic use and change the conditions for KTH's continued research activities in the laboratory, the report authors write.

"Crucially, the report also shows that we now have a much better overview, organisation and control over our activities and external relations. This means that we now believe that we have the necessary capacity to continue as principal," says Anders Söderholm.

The next step is to prepare a President's decision in accordance with the report's conclusion (Utredning av Scenario 3 för Electrumlaboratoriet in Swedish Slutrapport (pdf 320 kB)  and at the same time see if further conditions need to be clarified. A decision is expected within a couple of weeks.
