Assistance needed: Freshman math anxiety evaluation
A survey on math anxiety to improve math education in Europe.
Would you like to help with conducting a survey on maths anxiety among students? Mathematics is key language for technology and essential for any STEM subject. For a lot of students, Mathematics is the central gateway to enter this field. A poor self-image in relation to math is the biggest obstacle to start or even start trying STEM studies.
This project is dedicated to investigate the reasons and the general awareness among freshmen of the nine Unite! universities, one being KTH, regarding math anxiety. The project team consists of lecturers and PhD students from four partner universities (TU Graz, ULisboa, Wroclaw Tech and KTH) who want to improve math education in Europe.
The survey: Using the well-established and standardized R-MARS test with suitable adoptions, we want to establish a math anxiety map as a basis for further action. The used test distinguishes between Learning Math Anxiety (LMA) and Math Evaluation Anxiety (MEA).
The target group: Although focusing on first year students, all students can participate. The plan is to conduct the online survey from August to November 2024 and present an evaluation in December or January. The results will be published in form of an anxiety map and shared among the Unite! Community.
We need your support
We are looking for motivated lecturers, staff and student unions throughout the Unite! universities to help promote the survey among (first year) students. In order to be part of this survey please contact us via unite@edventure.studio You will then get detailed information and material on how to carry out this survey with your students. It will only take you about 10 minutes (5 min. to introduce the survey and motivate the students, to get their smartphones ready and 5 min. for the actual survey).
