AI and Industrial Transformation
The project aims to explore how the ongoing technology shift to artificial intelligence (AI) might trigger a profound transformation of the technology-based industry in Sweden.
Background
Breakthroughs of general-purpose technologies, such as AI, have through history been significantly difficult to handle for established corporations. How will a breakthrough of AI affect incumbent corporations? Depending on how AI is applied, it could either symbiotically strengthen existing businesses, or disrupt established companies, creating new industry logics and opportunities for new competitors to emerge. Drawing on theories on socio-technical transition and management of innovation, the project intends to bring a fresh perspective on the phenomenon of AI and autonomous systems.
Aims and objectives
The following research questions are addressed in the project:
- How will AI, as a general-purpose technology, change the Swedish industry?
- How will incumbent firms manage the AI-based technological shift?
- What roles will intermediaries and new entrants have in an AI-driven industrial transformation?
- How, and under which conditions, will established industries survive AI-driven transformations in Sweden?

Applied interdisciplinarity
Since the project is in an early, mapping stage, inter-disciplinary research has not been an issue so far. The intention is that issues across disciplines will be addressed in later phases, as the project evolves.
