Even though wildfires have a negative connotation nowadays, naturally occurring wildfires can be beneficial for ecosystems. However, the occurrence of more severe and uncontrolled wildfires has increased for several years. There is a need to detect wildfires with a higher spatial and temporal resolution than the ones currently provided by operational satellites.

In this project, an imager study and orbital design of a microsatellite constellation using near infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) imagers for wildfire monitoring, with enhanced spatial and temporal resolution, was conducted.

There were two main areas of focus: an imager study to assess and select the necessary instruments for sensing, and an orbital design to determine the number of satellites in the constellation and the orbit that they would follow
